In San Diego County, Zone Zero for fencing refers to the mandatory 0-to-5-foot ember-resistant zone immediately surrounding homes, structures, and attached decks, where wooden fences, gates, and trellises connected to a house must be replaced with non-combustible materials (metal, masonry). Effective February 2026 for new builds and February 2027 for existing homes in high-fire zones, this regulation aims to prevent the spread of fire.
Fire-Safe Fencing Options
California's Zone 0 regulations emphasize using non-combustible or fire-resistant materials to prevent wildfire spread. If your fence is attached to your home or within 5 feet of a structure, it must not be made of combustible materials like untreated wood.
